What is Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment, composed of deoxycholic acid, that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. After injection, Kybella provides patients with a more defined profile.
Candidates for Chin Reduction
Kybella is an excellent choice for men or women with excess submental fat causing the appearance of a double chin. The Kybella injections are a non-invasive procedure, making it an ideal choice for patients wanting to avoid more invasive procedures such as liposuction.
At The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Northern California, we administer Kybella as a series of small injections into the fat tissue under the chin. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. However, multiple treatments may be necessary and are typically spaced a month apart.

How Many Kybella Treatments Will I Need?
Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Our experienced physicians will help determine how many sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each Kybella treatment session is given at least 1 month apart and does not exceed 6 treatment sessions. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received 6 treatments. Once you have achieved your desired aesthetic goal further treatments are not typically needed.
After a Kybella treatment, patients do not require any downtime. It is common for patients to experience some swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. Be sure to inform our staff if you develop any side effects after treatment.
When Will I See Results From My Kybella Treatment?
Fat reduction in the area of treatment is gradual and improves over a period of weeks to months. One of the many benefits of Kybella is that it destroys the fat cells. After the appropriate amount of sessions, the results should be permanent and maintenance is not required.
